Barcelona and Italy: 8th Festival of Artist’s Books and Small Editions

Elisa Pellacani organizes a themed artist’s book festival each year, open to the public in Barcelona and Italy – in open courtyards, libraries and shops – a wonderful merging of city, culture and art. “Echo”, “What is held in memory”, “Embalm” and “Seeds” have each had their turn showing at this great annual festival. Doverodde, Denmark

One of my most memorable book arts experiences has been to travel to Denmark to speak about the book arts in Canada. Amid a picturesque setting, I exhibited my artist books at the Limfjordscentret Doverodde Købmandsgård and met other book artists from around the world. Denmark_wp1

Toronto International Book Fair

I exhibited a selection of my artist books at the inaugural (and only) Toronto International Book Fair – a show a little closer to home. Independent publishers and artists mixed with large publishing houses and well-known Canadian authors. TIBF_wp1

Content and Structure in the Book Arts

Content and Structure in the Book Arts

I recently contributed an article to Book Arts arts du livre, a semi-annual publication by the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists Guild. In it, I speak about one aspect of artist books that I tend to focus on: the relationship between content and structure, and the relevance of communicating a story through the medium. Upon making my first book to combine a series of drawing, painting and writing, I was unaware of the genre completely. Gradually, I discovered this great world of artist books and the people who make them – some extremely skilled in the traditional art of bookbinding, some using innovative techniques and structures, and some exploring the future of the book itself.

Human Book Festival, Spain/Italy

Human Book Festival, Spain/Italy, 2010

Artist and curator Elisa Pellacani organized the third annual Barcelona “Artist Book Festival 2010: HUMAN BOOK”, in conjunction with ILDE – Barcelona Association of Book Artists. The festival took place in the Plaza Sant Just, and then travelled to the Loring Art book store in Barcelona. I was pleased to have “Echo” as part of the festival.

A selection of works travelled to the Biblioteca di Brugherio (near Milan, Italy) – 25 books and 21 Sylvia Gutiérrez Sànchez’s photographs from the catalogue “Human Book”. Sylvia took a great shot of “Echo” for this exhibition and the architecture of the space was stunning. Have a look:

Labyrint 09, Sweden

Labyrint 09, Sweden

Swedish curators Joanna Sandell and Pia Sandström have put together a wonderful exhibition of artist books, writing, text objects and installations for “Labyrint 09, Writings and Observations”. I was happy to send “Echo” to them and be part of this international event! Echo is now part of the permanent archive of Labyrint, which will go on travelling exhibition.
